IT Skills in Farming: A Success Story from Nakuru, Kenya

At a young age, Kevin Kanja from Nakuru, Kenya, decided he wanted to be independent and make a difference in his community. Inspired by his grandparents, who raised chickens, he knew exactly what kind of business he wanted to start—a poultry farm.

“I was brought up with chickens raised by my grandfather and grandmother,” Kanja recalls. “It was in my blood.”

But before he could turn his dream into reality, Kanja knew he needed more than passion—he needed strong IT and business skills to manage and grow his enterprise successfully.

Building IT and Business Skills through HP LIFE e-Learning

Kanja began his learning journey at Tears Group Kenya, a local training and empowerment organization in Nakuru. While studying information technology, he discovered HP LIFE e-Learning, an online program designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs build skills in business and digital literacy.

Through HP LIFE’s interactive modules on finance, marketing, operations, and communication, Kanja sharpened his understanding of what it takes to run a sustainable business.

“After the course, I became more confident in planning and managing my business,” he says. “I knew I would make it.”

Turning Knowledge into Action: Launching Kevschik Poultry

Armed with new knowledge and confidence, Kanja launched Kevschik Poultry in Nakuru’s Pangani Estate. His farm produces and sells eggs, chicks, hens, and roosters, serving households and small-scale traders in the region.

Among the skills he applies daily are marketing and financial planning.

“I can now talk to customers face-to-face and use brochures and email to promote my products,” Kanja explains.

He also embraces innovative approaches such as green poultry feed, which supports sustainable and eco-friendly production—a reflection of his forward-thinking mindset.

Looking Ahead: Growth and Collaboration

Despite his busy schedule—balancing his IT diploma studies and his passion for soccer—Kanja continues to dream big. His goal is to expand Kevschik Poultry by reinvesting profits back into the business rather than spending them immediately.

“I plan to partner with my friends to grow Kevschik Poultry into something bigger,” he says with determination.

Kanja’s story is a testament to how digital skills can empower young entrepreneurs in agriculture to succeed in a changing world. His journey proves that technology and farming are no longer separate worlds—together, they are the future of sustainable agribusiness in Kenya.
